Hi all need help with this sum. thank you so much!!

There were thrice as many girls as the boys at the party. After 40 boys left the party, there were

5 times as many girls as the boys at the party. How many girls were there at the party?

Hi mumof8,

The girls at first is 3 units then become 5 times of boys, so I divided each unit into 5 smaller units so that the girls becomes 15 units, which can be divided by 5.

15u ÷ 5 = 3u, so the boys in the end is 3u. This means 40 boys who left is 5u – 3u = 2u.
