Question

Mrs Lee saved 2/5 of a packet of cookies for her family. She gave the remaining cookies to two of her neighbors, Mrs Wee & Mrs Tan. Mrs Wee received 3/4 of it & Mrs Tan received 24 cookies.

(a) What fraction of the packet of cookies did Mrs Tan receive?
(b) How many cookies were there in the packet?

Answer

Alternatively,

(a)
5 x 4u = 20u
(2/5) x 20u = 8u (Family)
20u – 8u = 12u
(3/4) x 12u = 9u (Mrs Wee)
20u – 9u – 8u = 3u
3u/20u = 3/20

(b)
3u ——- 24
1u ——- 24/3 = 8
20u ——- 8 x 20 = 160

Ans : (a) 3/20; (b) 160 cookies.
