Mandy had $1600 at first. She spent 2/5 of the money on a computer and spent another 1/8 of it on a present for her mother. She donated 1/10 of the renaming money and saved the rest.

(a) What fraction of her money did Mandy spend on the computer and the present?

(b) How much money did Mandy save?

Alternatively,

(a)
2/5 + 1/8 = (16 + 5)/40 = 21/40
or
(2/5) x 1600 = 640 (computer)
(1/8) x 1600 = 200 (present of her mother)
200 + 640 = 840
840/1600 = 21/40

(b)
1600 – 840 = 760

1 – (1/10) = 9/10
(9/10) x 760 = 684
or
(1/10) x 760 = 76 (donated)
760 – 76 = 684

Ans : (a) 21/40; (b) $684.
