In a restaurant, 4 chefs can prepare 24 dishes in 2 hours.

(a) Find the number of chefs required to prepare 46 dishes in 3 hours.

(b) On a particular day, the chefs were instructed by the restaurant owner to prepare a special buffet of 46 dishes from 11am to 2pm.  Due to the late arrival of the ingredients, the preparation time was halved.  Find the number of additional chefs required to prepare the dishes for the buffet.

I would solve the question as follows :

(a)
24 dishes ——- 4 (chefs) x 2 (hours) = 8 chef hours
24/8 = 3 dishes ——- 8/8 = 1 chef hour
46 dishes ——- 46/3 = 15 1/3 chef hours
(15 1/3)/3 = 46/9 = 5 1/9 round up to 6

(b)
(5 1/9) x 2 = 10 2/9 round up to 11
11 – 6 = 5
or
11am to 2pm ——- 3h
3h/2 = 1.5h
46/(1.5 x 3) = 10 2/9 round up to 11
11 – 6 = 5

Ans : (a) 6 chefs; (b) 5 additional chefs.

Not sure if you are allowed to use this method,

a)

more dishes = more chefs

the number of dishes is multiplied by 46/24. so the number of chefs needed is also multiplied by 46/24.

more time = less chefs

the amount of time is lengthen by 3/2 times, so the number of chefs needed is divided by 3/2

4 × 46/24 ÷ 3/2 = 5  1/9 chefs

So, they will need 6 chefs.

b)  Time is halved. So they require doubled number of chefs.

5 1/9 × 2 = 10 2/9

So, it is 11 chefs
