Question

Please help with below question.

Elaine had prepared 4573 butter and chocolate cookies altogether for a sale.  At the end of the day, 50% of the butter cookies and 60% of the chocolate cookies were sold.  She was left with 2032 cookies.

How many chocolate cookies did Elaine prepare at first?

Answer

butter cookies ——- 10u
chocolate cookies ——- 10p
10u + 10p ——- 4573
5u + 4p ——- 2032
10u + 8p ——- 4064
10p – 8p = 2p ——- 4573 – 4064 = 509
2p x 5 = 10p ——- 509 x 5 = 2545

Ans : 2545 chocolate cookies.

Before

Number of butter cookies → 2B

Number of chocolate cookies → 5C

2B + 5C = 4573

After

Half of butter cookies sold, left → B

60% or 3/5 of chocolate cookies sold, left → 2C

B + 2C = 2032

Multiply by 2 → 2B + 4C = 4064

(2B + 5C)  (2B + 4C) = 4573 – 4064

C = 509

Number of chocolate cookies at first → 5C = 5 × 509 = 2545
