Thank you for the answer. While I understood how you solved the qn, is there another easier way to help my child u/stand it easily? Looks kinda complex to a child who has Math anxiety 🙂

I would solve the question as follows :

Scenario 1 : If 5 pencils were removed from the box,

number of pencils left ——- 1u

total number of remaining pencils and pens left ——- 6u

number of  pens ——- 6u  – 1u = 5u

Scenario 2 : If 9 pens were removed from the box,

number of pencils ——- 1p

number of pens left ——- 3p

1u + 5 ——- 1p

5u ——- 3p + 9

3p + 9 ——- 3 x (1u + 5) + 9 = 3u + 24

5u ——- 3u + 24

5u – 3u = 2u ——- 24

1u ——- 24/2 = 12

1u + 5 ——- 12 + 5 = 17 (pencils)

5u ——- 5 x 12 = 60 (pens)

60 + 17 = 77

Ans : 77 pencils and pens.
