Question

Tim’s weekly pocket money is $13.50 more than Sam’s. Sam spends $17.70 more than Tim every week. Tim spends 5/11 of his pocket money every week. Sam saves 1/2 as much as Tim every week. How much money does Sam spend in a week?

pls help to explain this beside using model drawing method. thank you.

Answer

weekly pocket money

Tim : 11u

Sam :11u – 13.50

weekly spending

Tim : 5u

Sam : 5u + 17.70

11u + 5u = 6u ——- [11u – 13.50 – (5u + 17.70)] x 2 = 12u – 62.40

1u ——- 62.40/(12 – 6) = 10.40

5u + 17.70 ——- 5 x 10.40 + 17.70 = 69.70

Ans : $69.70.

You are welcome.

Just curious….

You had always asked for solutions not using model drawing, because, iirc, you said model drawing is confusing. So have you been teaching your child to solve using algebra?

Summarise…

  Total pocket $   = Spend + Save +Extra
Sam  u 5/11 of Tim’s pocket $+$17.70 3/11 of Tim’s pocket $
Tim u + 13.50 5/11 of Tim’s pocket $ 6/11 of Tim’s pocket $
Analyse and try:
Sam+13.50 u + 13.50 5/11 of Tim’s pocket $+$17.70 3/11 of Tim’s pocket $ +13.50

Comparing last row to Tim’s:

                                   (11/11 –  5/11  –  3/11) of Tim’s pocket $ = 17.70+13.50

                                                                 3/11  of Tim’s pocket $ = 31.20

                                                                 1/11  of Tim’s pocket $ = 10.40

Sam spends:                                  5/11 Tim’s pocket$ +17.70 = $69.70#

Checked     Total pocket $      =                 Spend                     +                   Save

Sam                        $100.90                            $69.70                                        $31.20

Tim                        $114.40                              $52                                           $62.40
