Question

Mary prepared some fruit tarts. She sold 132 fruit tarts in the morning and 1/4 of the remaining fruit tarts in the afternoon. She had 1/5 of the total number of fruit tarts left. How many fruit tarts did she prepare at first?

Answer

132 + 1u + 1u + 1u + 1u = 4u + 132 ——- 3u x 5 = 15u
1u ——- 132/(15 – 4) = 12
15u ——- 15 x 12 = 180

Ans : 180 fruit tarts.

You start with after she sold 132 tarts in the morning. Then she is left with 4 parts of tarts.

Then in the afternoon, she sold 1/4 of the 4 parts. She is left with 3 parts.

3 parts is 1/5 of the total she had. That means in the beginning she had 5/5, i.e. 15 parts.

 In the morning, she sold 15 – 4 = 11 parts.

11 parts = 132

1 parts = 12

In the morning, she prepared 15 parts = 15 x 12 = 180 ##
