Question

Mr Raj spent 1/5 of his money and an additional $12 on a Hi-fi set. He then spent 1/4 of his remaining money and an additional $9 on a television set. He was left with $696.

a) How much did the television set cost?

b) How much money did he have at first?

Answer

Working backwards

“He then spent 1/4 of his remaining money and an additional $9 on a television set. He was left with $696.”

The above statement suggest that 3/4 of the remaining money is $696 + $9 = $705
The remaining money is ,4/4 => $940

“Mr Raj spent 1/5 of his money and an additional $12 on a Hi-fi set”

The above suggest that 4/5 of his money is Remaining money +$12
4/5 => $940 + $ 12 = $952
5/5 => $1190

A) Television = 1/4 of Remaining money + 9 = 1/4 X $940 + $9 = $244 ##

B) At first he had $1190 ##

(a)
1/4 of his remaining money + 9 + 696 ——- 4/4 of his remaining money
3/4 of his remaining money ——- 9 + 696 = 705
1/4 of his remaining money ——- 705/3 = 235
235 + 9 = 244

(b)
4/4 of his remaining money ——- 940
1/5 of his money + 12 + 940 ——- 5/5 of his money
4/5 of his money ——- 12 + 940 = 952
1/5 of his money ——- 952/4 = 238
5/5 ——- 238 x 5 = 1190

Ans : (a) $244; (b) $1190.
