# Question

Mr Lee prepared 1035 fishballs and sotong balls for sale. After he sold 3/5 of the fishballs and 1/4 of the sotong balls, he was left with the same number of fishballs and sotong balls. How many fishballs did he sell?

fishballs ——- 5u
sotong balls ——- 4p

5u + 4p ——- 1035
1 – 3/5 = 2/5 ——- 5u – 3u = 2u
1 – 1/4 = 3/4 ——- 4p – 1p = 3p
2u ——- 3p
1p ——- 2u/3
5u + 4(2u/3) ——- 1035
15u + 8u = 23u ——- 3105
1u ——- 3105/23 = 135
3u ——- 3 x 135 = 405

Ans : 405 fishballs.

same method as Guest. I use fractional presentation because it looks more clean cut to me. Up to your preference.

Left same number of fishballs and sotong ball.

2/5 F = 3/4 S

make numerator same for 6u sold for each

6/15 F = 6/8 S

denominator shows total 15u of fishballs and 8u of sotong balls at first

23u = 1035

u=45

Fishballs sold: 15u-6u=9u is 405#

Ratio of unsold FB : total FB is   2 : 5

Ratio of unsold SB : total SB   3 : 4

Since unsold FB = unsold SB, making 2 and 3 common multiples, ie. 6

Therefore,

Ratio of unsold FB : total FB is   6 : 15

Ratio of unsold SB : total SB   6 : 8

Total FB and SB will be 23 units (15 + 8).

23 units = 1035

1 unit = 45

Number of fishball sold will be,

(15 units – 6 units) x 45 = 405
