# Question

pls help in part (b) only, my answer for a) 880. thank you

(a)
30% x 1600 = 480 (ducks)
1600 – 480 = 1120 (chickens and geese)
11 + 3 = 14
1120/14 = 80
11 x 80 = 880 (chickens)

(b)
1120 – 480 = 640

Ans : (a) 880 chickens; (b) 640 ducks.

Currently 30% are ducks. To increase the number of ducks to 50% is equivalent as reducing the number of other animals from 70% to 50%.

That is, 1600*(1-30%)=1120 now constitutes 50% of the total. Hence the number of animals after the purchase is 1120/50%=2240.

He bought 2240-1600=640 ducks.

Another simpler way to see it.

For ducks to be 50%, it has to the same value as Chicken and Geese combine as they make the other 50%.

Chicken and Geese combine is 1120 from the table, so Duck also need to increase to 1120 also  make half.

Duck needs to increase by = 1120 – 480 = 640##
