a) what was their savings at first?

b) how much was the gift?

pls help. thanks.

Tim’savings : Xavier’s savings

3 : 2

12u : 8u

Tim’s share of cost : Xavier’s shares of cost

4 : 3

12u : 9u

8u – 9u ——- \$182 ?

To solve the question, I have made some changes :

Tim and Xavier had savings in the ratio 2 : 3. They bought a gift for their friend and share the cost. The ratio of Tim’s shares to Xavier’s shares was 4 : 3. Tim used up of his savings while Xavier had \$180 left after they bought the gift. (a) What was their savings at first? (b) How much was the gift?

(a)
Tim :
savings ——- 2u x 4 = 8u
shared cost of gift ——- 4u x 2 = 8u

Xavier :
savings ——- 3u x 4 = 12u
shared cost of gift ——- 3u x 2 = 6u

12u – 6u = 6u ——- 180
1u ——- 180/6 = 30
8u + 12u = 20u ——- 20 x 30 = 600

(b)
8u + 6u = 14u ——- 14 x 30 = 420

Ans : (a) \$600; (b) \$420.
