in 1 hour, Alan could travel 1/4 of the distance and Sally could travel 1/6 of the distance.

In the first hour, Alan travelled 1/4 of the distance.

Hence at 12.30, 3/4 of distance left for Alan and Sally.

Total speed of Alan and Sally = 1/4 + 1/6 = 5/12 (since they travel towards each other)

Time taken = 3/4 ÷ 5/12 = 9/5 hour = 1 hour 48 min

They pass each other 1 hour and 48 min after 12.30 —-> 2.18pm

In 1 h,
Alan travelled 1/4 of the journey while Sally travelled 1/6.

1 – (1/4) = 3/4
(1/4) + 1/6) = 5/12
(3/4) / (5/12) = (3/4) x (12/5) = 9/5
9/5 h = 1 h 48 min
11.30 am <— 1h —> 12.30pm <— 1 h 48 min —> 2.18pm

Ans : 2.18pm.
