Question

The jury was/were not able to reach a decision as they had different views.

I don’t know if I should use ‘were’ due to the pronoun ‘they’.

“was” is right. Because “jury” here is thought of as a single unit.

‘Group nouns (e.g. committee, jury, army, team, family etc.) are followed by singular verbs when the group is thought of as a single unit. But when individual members of the group are thought of, the plural verb is used.’ -from Google.

The answer should be ‘were’. You are right.
