Each girl took 11 sweets, except the last girl, Mary, who had only 6.

Seeing that Mary had fewer sweets, each of Mary’s friends gave up 3 sweets.

Mary took 2 from the pile given up by her friends so that she too, had 8 sweets.

Now there were 25 sweets in the pile.

Total number of sweets given up by Mary’s friends -> 25 + 2 = 27

Since each of them gave up 3 sweets, 27/3 = 9

(a) 9 friends + Mary = 10 girls in total

(b) Total number of sweets -> 6 + (9 × 11) = 105

or 25 + (10 × 8) = 105
