Question

Jim set a target score for his Math test. after the Math teacher returned his test paper to him, he realized that if he increased his target score by 10%, he would need 1 more mark to reach his actual test score. if he increased his target score by 15%, this target score would exceed his actual test score by 3 marks. find his actual test score.

Answer

Target score -> 100u

Scenario 1

110u + 1 = Actual score

Scenario 2

115u – 3 = Actual score

110u + 1 = 115u – 3

5u = 4

100u = 80

110u = 88

Actual score = 88 + 1 = 89

target score ——- 100u
110u + 1 ——- actual test score
115u ——- actual test score + 3
110u + 1 ——- 115u – 3
115u – 110u = 5u ——- 1 + 3 = 4
1u ——- 4/5 = 0.8
110u + 1 ——- 110 x 0.8 + 1 = 89
or
115u – 3 ——- 115 x 0.8 – 3 = 89

Ans : 89.
