The total cost of the pens was $144 more than the total cost of pencils.

180 – 144 = 36 (making amount spent on pens and pencils the same)
36/2 = 18 (total cost of pencils)

36/2 = 18 (total cost of 1u of pencils)
180 – 18 = 162 (total cost 3u of pens)
162/3 = 54 (cost of 1u of pens)
54 – 18 = 36
36/4 = 9

Ans : 9 pencils.

May I check why do you divide 36 by 2?
