Question

There are some pupils in a class.

3/8 of the girls and 3/5 of the boys of the class can swim.

20 pupils of the class cannot swim. There is an equal number of boys and girls who cannot swim. How many pupils are there in the class?

Answer

5/8 of girls cannot swim

2/5 of boys cannot swim

Since there is an equal number of boys and girls who cannot swim, the number of boys and girls respectively who cannot swim is 20 / 2 = 10.

Total no. of girls in class = 8/5 x 10 = 16

Total no. of boys in class = 5/2 x 10 = 25

Total no. of pupils in class = 16 + 25 = 41

  Girls Boys
Total 8/8 5/5
Can Swim 3/8 3/5
Cannot Swim 8/8 – 3/85/8 5/5 – 3/52/5

Given (1): Total cannot swim -> 20

Given (2): Equal number of boys and girls cannot swim

Therefore, 10 boys and 10 girls cannot swim

Girls

5/8 = 10

8/8 = 10 × 8/5 = 16

Boys

2/5 = 10

5/5 = 10 × 5/2 = 25

Total pupils -> 16 + 25 = 41
