Question

Joanne had a total of 700 red, blue and green beads. 2/5 of the beads were red and the rest were blue and green. She used an equal number of blue and green beads to make some necklaces. In the end, she had 1/3 of the blue beads and 1/2 of the green beads left.

a) How many beads were blue and green?

b) What was the total number of beads left?

Answer

B left : B used
1 : 2
3 : 6 (×3 to make B+G=21u)

G left : G used
1 : 1
2 : 2 (× 2 to make G used=B used)
6 : 6 (× 3 to make B+G=21u)

R : B+G
2 : 3
14: 21

R : B : G : Total
14: 9 : 12 : 35
35u=700
1u=700÷35
=20

a) B + G –> 21u
= 21×20
= 420

b) Beads left –> 14u+3u+6u
= 23u
= 23×20
= 460
