Question

Donald has a collection of $1 and 50 cent coins in the ratio 3:4.The total value of all the coins is $70.Find the number of 50 cent coins Donald has.

Answer

      By unit                 By value

  $1   :  $0.50           $1   :  $0.50

   3u  :  4u                 3u :  2u

5u=70

1u = 70 ÷ 5

      = 14

Number of 50 cents coin = 4u

                                              = 4 × 14

                                              = 56

Number of $1 coins → 3u

Value of all $1 coins → 3u x $1

         = $3u

Number of $0.50 coins → 4u

Value of all $0.50 coins → 4u x $0.50

             = $2u

Total value of all the coins = $3u + $2u

                                                 = $5u

$5u = $70

1u = $70 ÷ $5

     = 14 coins

Number of 50¢ coins → 4 units

                                        = 4 x 14 coins

                                        = 56 (Ans)
