Question

A shop owner paid a total of $5504 for some shirts and some ties.He paid $128 less for the shirts than the ties.Each tie cost $16 more than each shirt.The number of ties bought was 2/3 of the number of shirts bought.

a)how much did he pay for all the shirts?

b)how many shirts did he buy?

Answer

By value

Amt paid for shirt = p

Amt paid for tie = p + 128

2p + 128 = 5504

2p = 5504-128

      = 5376

1p = 5376÷2

     = 2688

a) Amt paid for shirts = $2688 (ans)

By number

2 units of tie = $2688+$128=$2816

1 unit of tie =$2816÷2=$1408

3 units of shirts = $2688

1 unit of shirt = $2688÷3 = $896

Gap = $1408 – $896 = $512

Diff = $16

u = 512 ÷ 16 = 32

b) Number of shirts bought = 3u

                                                   = 3 × 32

                                                   = 96 (ans)
