Question

Hi everyone can help to solve this questions? Fractions and ratio concept repeated identity. Thank you!

1) 1/4 of the spectators at a basketball tournament are women. The number of girls is 2/5 the number of women. The number of men is 6 times the number of girls. The number of boys is 770 fewer than the number of men. How many spectators are at the basketball tournament?

Source: RGPS

Answer

women : rest of spectators
1 : 4
5 : 20

(2/5) x (1/4) = 2/20 (girls)
6 x (2/20) = 12/20 (men)
20 – 12 – 2 – 5 = 1
12 – 1 = 11
11 units = 770
1 unit = 70
20 units = 1400

Ans : 1400 spectators.

Hi there,

This question can be solved by a combination of understanding Ratio & Fractions. Drawing a model will help you show this.

Men 5u 5u 5u
Women 5u
Girls 2u
Boys ?u

To find the # of girls:
2/5 x 1/4 =2/20

To find the # of men:
2/20 x 6u = 12/20

To find the # of boys:
20u – (12u + 2u + 5u)= 1u

Take # of Men- Boys to find the extra
12u – 1u = 11u

11units = extra 770 people
1u = 770 ÷ 70 people
20u = 70 x 20 =1400 people

There are 1400 spectators at the basketball tournament altogether! 🙂

W->5u

M->12u

G-> 2u

B->20u-5u-12u-2u

  = 1u

M-B -> 12u-1u

        = 11u

11u = 770

1u=770÷11

Number of spectators = 20u

                                         =20×70
