Question

Christopher had $154 more than Ryan at first. After Christopher gave $262 to Ryan, Ryan had 3 times as much as Christopher. How much did they have altogether?

Answer

At first: C – 1 unit + 154

               R – 1 unit

In the end: C -1 part

                     R – 3 parts

(draw a model, you will visualize that 1 unit = 1 part + 108)

2 parts = 108 + 262

             = 370

1 part = 370 / 2

           = 185

4 parts = 4 x 185

              = 740 (ans)

At first,
Christopher : 1 unit + 154
Ryan : 1 unit

After Christopher gave $262 to Ryan, Ryan had 3 times as much as Christopher,
Christopher : 1 unit + 154 – 262 = 1 unit – 108
Ryan : (1 unit – 108) + (1 unit – 108) + (1 unit – 108) = 3 units – 324

3 units – 324 = 1 unit + 262
1 unit = (262 + 324)/(3 – 1) = 293
2 units + 154 = 740

Ans : $740

This is a Before After question.

         Before      Transfer  After     Ratio
Christopher  1u + 154   -262  1u – 108  1
Ryan 1u  + 262 1u + 262         3
Total 2u + 154

(1u – 108) / 1  =  (1u + 262) / 3

3u – 324  =  1u + 262

3u – 1u = 262 + 324

2u = 586

586 + 154 = 740 Ryan
