Question

Joshua used 1/4 of a coil of rope to hold a shelf to the wall, kept 4/9 of the remainder and used the rest equally to tie 2 parcels.
(a) What fraction of the rope did Joshua use to tie each parcel? Giver your answer as a fraction in
its simplest form.
(b) Joshua had 240 cm of rope at first. How long was the rope he used to tie each parcel.

(a)
4 x 9 = 36
(1/4) x 36 = 9 (used to hold a shelf to the wall)
36 – 9 = 27
(4/9) x 27 = 12 (kept 4/9 of the remainder)
27 – 12 = 15
15/2 = 7 1/2
(7 1/2)/36 = 5/24

(b)
(5/24) x 240 = 50

Ans : (a) 5/24; (b) 50 cm.

b)    36u = 240

1u = 240 ÷ 36 = 6 2/3

15u = 6 2/3 × 15 = 100
