Question

Please help with this Question : 

The sum of four numbers A, B, C and D was 350. When A was tripled, B halved, C increased by 42 and D decreased by 2, the four numbers became equal.  Find the original value of each number. 

TIA. 

Answer

3A = B/2 = C + 42 = D – 2
A ——- 1 unit
B ——- 3 units x 2 = 6 units
C ——- 3 units – 42
D ——- 3 units + 2
A + B + C + D ——- 1 unit + 6 units + 3 units – 42 + 3 units + 2 = 13 units – 40 = 350
1 unit = (350 + 40)/13 = 30
A ——- 1 x 30 = 30
B ——- 6 x 30 = 180
C ——- 3 x 30 – 42 = 48
D ——- 3 x 30 + 2 = 92

Ans : A — 30, B — 180, C — 48 and D — 92.

This is a After Before question. 

         A      B       C      D          Total  
 After    3u 3u  3u  3u   12u
 Before     1u 6u   3u – 42   3u + 2  13u – 40

13u – 40  = 350

13u = 350 + 40 = 390

1u =  390 ÷ 13 = 30 (A)

6u = 30 × 6 = 180 (B)

3u = 3 × 30 = 90

90 – 42 = 48 (C)

90 + 2 = 92 (D)
