Question

Hi I would appreciate it if I could get help with these 2 questions that have been bugging me:

  1. What is the base of the ancient roman numeral system?
  2. What is the base of the ancient Chinese counting rod system?

I’ve tried searching the web but I just can’t seem to understand the stuff they say:(. Please do explain it to me in a more simplified version. Thank you!

Answer

Hi,

1)

The Roman Numeric System is based 10 system.

The number repeated every cycle of 10.

However, it uses the following 7 symbols to represent the numbers.

Symbol I V X L C D M
Value 1 5 10 50 100 500 1,000

246 is CCXLVI

2014 as MMXIV

2)

The Chinese counting rod use vertical (V) and horizontal (H) rods as digits.

This also a base 10 system.

Thousand Hundred Ten One
H V H V

A perpendicular means 5+.  Nothing means 0.
