Total marks scored = 7p

Total marks scored in Maths & English = 7p – Science marks = (7p – 55)

Marks in Maths = Marks in English

Marks in Maths = (7p – 55) / 2

Marks for Maths (or English) = (Total marks – Science marks)/2 = (7p-55)/2

*7p is total, not average, if I read your question correctly.

This is a Part whole question.

  Science   Maths  English  total
    55     21p

3 × 7p = 21p

(21p – 55) / 2
