Question

Hi, need help on the following:

Ahmad had 235 marbles more than Carl, Bill had 56 marbes than Carl. Ahmad had 79 fewer marbles than the total numbers of marbles Bill and Carl had. How many marbles did the 3 boys have altogether?

Thanks.

Answer

Ahmad : 1 unit + 235
Carl : 1 unit
Bill : 1 unit + 56

1 unit + 235 + 79 = 1 unit + 314
1 unit + 56 + 1 unit = 2 units + 56
1 unit = 314 – 56 = 258
1 unit + 235 + 1 unit + 1 unit + 56 = 3 x 258 + 291 = 1065

Ans : 1065 marbles.

This is a Part Whole question.

Carl is the common person.

Assume that Bill has 56 more than  Carl. (Not stated)

    Carl   Ahmed   Bill    Total
Quantity  1u 1u + 235 1u + 56  3u + 291

1u + 235 + 79 = 1u + 1u + 56

235 + 79 – 56 = 2u – 1u

1u = 258

3u = 258 × 3 = 774

774  + 291 = 1065
