Answer

Dogs hang out their tongues on a hot day to facilitate perspiration, release heat and cool down their body. Unlike Humans, dogs perspire through their mouths via the tongue. Hence, this is their method of maintaining their body temperature on hot days.

For some¬†dogs, leaving the¬†tongue sticking out¬†of¬†their¬†mouth is just a sign of complete relaxation. It’s only true hanging¬†tongue¬†syndrome when they can’t pull it back in. Hanging¬†tongue¬†syndrome is not something¬†dogs¬†can control. For whatever reason, they just can’t pull¬†their tongue¬†all the way into¬†their¬†mouth

Yes, there was such a question and in fact, the Science questions on Adaptation often requires students to infer. So one tip to teach your children is to make educated guesses based on the information given in the question and phrase it with key words that they learnt. E.g. Dogs sticking their tongues out are a behavioural adaptation to help them cool down, while the elephants’ ears are a structural adaption to help them cool down.

Hope it helps!
