Question

Ahmad had 400 sticks of chicken and mutton satay in all. After selling 1/9 of the chicken satay and 15 sticks of mutton satay, he had 1/4 as many mutton satay as chicken satay left. How many sticks of chicken satay did Ahmad have at first?

Answer

9 – 1 = 8 (chicken satay left)
(1/4) x 8 = 2 (mutton satay left)
400 – 15 = 385
385/(9 + 2) = 35
35 x 9 = 315

Ans : 315 sticks of chicken.

This is a Before After question.

LCM

1/9

    Before Transfer  After
Chicken 9u – 1u 8u
Mutton 400 – 9u – 15 385 – 9u
Total 400   385 – 1u

8u / 4    = (385 – 9u) / 1

2u = 385 – 9u

2u + 9u = 385

11u = 385

1u = 385 ÷ 11 = 35

9u = 35 × 9 = 315
