In the middle of the month, Miss Ong withdrew 5/6 of her money from the bank to buy a badminton racket and a bicycle. She spent $148 on the badminton racket and the remaining $412 on the bicycle. When she received her m0nthly salary at the end of the month, she saved 7/9 of it in the bank. As a result, the amount of money in her bank became $1400.

a) After the withdrawal, how much money had she left in the bank?

b) How much was Miss Ong’s monthly salary?

148 + 412 = 560
560/5 = 112

(b)
1400 – 112 = 1288
1288 x (9/7) = 1656

Ans : (a) $112; (b) $1656.

Amount   560 112 + 1288 1400

a)

5u = 148 +412 = 560

1u = 560 ÷ 5 = $112

b) 

1400 – 112 = 1288

7u = 1288

1u = 1288 ÷ 7 = 184

9u = 184 x 9 = $1656
