Question

p6 fraction

There were 525 children at a school in the morning. After 2/5 of the boys and 1/3 of the girls went home in the afternoon, there were 5/6 as many girls as boys left in school. How many children went home in the afternoon ?

Answer

total boys at school in the morning : 5u
boys went home in the afternoon : 2u
boys left in school in the afternoon : 3u

total girls at school in the morning : 3p
girls went home in the afternoon : 1p
girls left in school in the afternoon : 2p

5u + 3p ——- 525
(girls/boys) left in school in the afternoon = 2p/3u ——- 5/6
12p ——- 15u
4p ——- 5u
4p + 3p = 7p ——- 525
1p ——- 75
5u + 3 x 75 = 5u + 225 ——- 525
1u ——- (525 – 225)/5 = 60
2u ——- 120
120 + 75 = 195

Ans : 195 children.

This is a Matrix question.

LCM (Left)

boy 3/5 = 6/10 = 36/60

girl 2/3 = 6/9 = 30/45

  Go Home Left Total
Boys 24u 36u 60u
Girls 15u 30u 45u
Total 39u   105u

105u = 525

1u = 525 ÷ 105 = 5

39u = 39 x 5 = 195 went home

You cannot use Simultaneous Equation because there is only one key, 525, given.
