Question

Fraction

  1. Sheng Jie had some money. He used 1/3 of it on a wallet and 2/5 of it on a jersey. He had $1.60 left. How much money did he have at first?

Answer

money at first : 3 x 5 = 15 units
15 units x (1/3) = 5 units (wallet)
15 units x (2/5) = 6 units (jersey)
15 – 5 – 6 = 4 units = 1.60
1 unit = 0.40
15 units = 6

Ans : $6.

How much he spent = 1/3 + 2/5 = 11/15

How much he had left = 1 – 11/15 = 4/15

4/15 = $1.60

15/15 = 1.60/4 x 15

= $6.00

1/3  used on wallet -> change to the same denominator -> 5/15
2/5 used on jersey -> change to the same denominator -> 6/15

Therefore, he used 5 units on wallet and 6 units on jersey.
He used a total of 11 units and left with 4 units.

4 units -> $1.60
1 unit -> $0.40
15 units -> $0.40 x 15 = $6
