# Question

At a 2-day workshop, each participant was charged \$55 per day. On Day 1, the number of male participants was 60 fewer than the number of female participants. On Day 2, the number of female participants decreased by 20% while the male participants increased by 30%. There were 573 participants on Day 2.

a) What was the total number of participants for the 2-day workshop?

b) How much did the organizer collect in total from the 2-day workshop?

(a)
Day 1 :
female participants —— 10 units
male participants ——- (10 units – 60)

Day 2 :
female participants —— 10 units x (100% – 20%) = 8 units
male participants ——- (10 units – 60) x (100% + 30%) = 13 units – 78

8 units + 13 units – 78 ——- 573
1 units ——- (573 + 78)/(8 + 13) = 31
10 units + 10 units – 60 = 20 units – 60 ——- 20 x 31 – 60 = 560
560 + 573 = 1133

(b)
1133 x 55 = 62315

Ans : (a) 1133 participants; (b) \$62315.

This is a Simultaneous equation.

 Day 1 Day 2 D1 x 6.5 D2 × 5 D2 + D1 Male -100 130 -650 650 0 Female 100 80 650 400 1050 Amount 60 573 390 2865 3255

1055u = 3255

1u = 3255 ÷ 1055 = 3.1

a)

100u = 3.1 × 100 = 310

310 – 60 = 250

310 + 250 + 573 =  1133

b)

1133 × 55 = \$62315
