Answer

(a)
total fruits : 40 units
apples : (2/5) x 40 = 16 units
(1/4) x 16 = 4 units
pears : 40 – 16 = 24 units
(3/8) x 24 = 9 units
(40 – 4 – 9)/40 = 27/40

(b)
27 units = 81
4 + 9 = 13
13 units = (81/27) x 13 = 39

2/5 = 16/40 –> were apples
1/4 x 16 units = 4 units –> apples used
therefore, 12/40 apples left

1 – 16/40 = 24/40 –> were pears
3/8 x 24 units = 9 units –> pears used
therefore, 15/40 pears left

(a) 12/40 + 15/40 = 27/40 fruits left

(b)
27 units -> 81
1 unit -> 81/27 = 3
total units to make tarts -> 4 units + 9 units = 13 units
13 units -> 3 x 13 = 39 fruits

P…………………. 3/8 × 3/3 = 9/24

   Used  Left   Total
Apple 4u 12u 16u
Pear 9u 15u 24u
Total 13u 27u 40u

a)
