# Question

Darren, Muthu and Hafiz shared the cost of a gift equally using their savings. Darren saved \$36 more than Muthu. If Darren paid for the gift first, the ratio of Darren’s remaining savings to Muthu’s savings to Hafiz’s savings would be 4:9:11. If Muthu paid for the gift first, the ratio of Darren’s savings to Muthu’s remaining savings to Hafiz’s savings would be 12:1:11. If Hafiz paid for the gift first, the ratio of Darren’s savings to Muthu’s savings to Hafiz’s remaining savings would be 4:3:1. How much did the gift cost?

Dr:M:H = 4:9:11

D:Mr:H = 12:1:11

D:M:Hr = 4:3:1  —> x3 —> 12:9:3

So, D:M:H = 12:9:11

(Means D paid 8 units balance 4 units

M paid 8 units balance 1 unit

H paid 8 units balance 3 units )

D saves 12-9=3 units more than Muthu and 1 unit is \$36/3 =\$12

total cost of gift = 3 x 8units x \$12 = \$288#

\$288 is incorrect. Correct answer is \$96.

Question say “Paid for the gift first” and “how much did the gift cost”. regardless who pay first, the cost of the gift is always \$96.

equally shared the cost is not so important here.
