Question

Mrs Sim mixed 5/8 litre of water with 1/3 litre of syrup to make a drink in a jug. She drank 1/3 of the drink and poured the rest into similar cups of 1/10 litre each and had some left in the jug.
(a) How many such cups of drinks were there ?
(b) What was the volume of the drink that was left in the jug ?
( Give your answer in litres )

Answer

(a)
5/8 + 1/3 = 23/24 = 69/72 (l of drink)
(1/3) x (23/24) = 23/72 (drank 1/3 of the drink)
(69/72) – (23/72) = 46/72 (the rest)
(46/72)/(1/10) = 6 (rounded down to the nearest whole number)

(b)
(7/18) x (1/10) = 7/180

Ans : (a) 6 cups; (b) 7/180 litre.
