Question

Kim and Daniel bought some balloons for a party. Kim used up 7/12 of her balloons and Daniel used up 4/5 of his. In the end, they had 173 balloons left. If kim bought 60 more balloons than Daniel at first, How many balloons did they buy altogether?

Answer

This is a before after  question.

LCM

7/12 = 35/60

4/5 = 48/60

     Before     Used  after
Kim 60u + 60 – 35u – 35   25u + 25
Daniel  60u -48u 12u
Total   120u + 60     37u + 25

37u + 25 = 173

37u = 173 – 25 = 148

1u = 148 ÷ 37 = 4

120u = 120 × 4 = 480

480 + 60 = 540

This is a Simultaneous Equation question.

Two key numbers are given, 60 and 173.

     R1      R2 R2 x 5   R1 + R2
Kim 12 5  25  37
Daniel  -5  1  5  0
Total   60 173  865  925

37u =925

1u = 925 ÷ 37 = 25

12u = 12 × 25 = 300  kim

300 – 60 = 240 Daniel

300 + 240 = 540
