Question

Averine, Brayden and Catrina shared a container of cookies. Averine received 1/4 of the total share of Brayden and Catrina. Brayden received 1/3 of the total share of Averine and Catrina. Catrina received 42 more cookies than Brayden. How many cookies did the three children share altogether?

Answer

This a Common Ratio problem.

1+4 = 5

1+3 = 4

LCM 4 × 5 = 20

1/5 = 4/20

1/4 = 5/20

    Averine  Brayden Catrain  Total
R1   4u     20u
R2   5u   20u
CR 4u 5u 11u 20u

11u – 5u = 42

6u = 42

1u = 42 ÷ 6 = 7

 20u = 7 ×20 = 140

Averine : Brayden + Catrina : Total
1 : 4 : 5
4 : 16 : 20

Brayden : Averine + Catrina : Total
1 : 3 : 4
5 : 15 : 20

20 – 4 – 5 = 11 (Catrina)
11 – 5 = 6
42/6 = 7
7 x 20 = 140

Ans : 140 cookies.
