If Catherine buys 4 burgers and 2 packets of large fries, she will have 30 cents leftover. If she buys 2 burgers and 3 packets of  large fries, she will have \$2.40 leftover. Given that each burger costs \$2.80.

a) Find the cost of one packet of large fries.

b) Find the amount of money that Catherine has.

Source: Assessment

(a)
4 burgers + 2 packets of large fries + 0.30 = 2 burgers + 3 packets of large fries + 2.40
2 burgers = 2.80 x 2 = 5.60 = 1 packets of large fries + 2.10
1 packets of large fries = 5.60 – 2.10 = 3.50

(b)
4 burgers + 2 packets of large fries + 0.30 = 4 x 2.80 + 2 x 3.50 + 0.30 = 18.50
or
2 burgers + 3 packets of large fries + 2.40 = 2 x 2.80 + 3 x 3.50 + 2.40 = 18.50

Ans : (a) \$3.50; (b) \$18.50.

This is a Matrix question.

 Burger Fries left Total R1 11.20 2u + 0.3 2u + 11.5 R2 5.60 3u + 2.4 3u + 8

a)

4 × 2.8 = 11.20

2 × 2.8 = 5.60

2u + 11.5 = 3u + 8

11.5 – 8 = 3u – 2u

1u = \$3.50

b)

3u = 3.5 × 3 = 10.5

10.5 + 8 = \$18.50
