Method 1 :

(a)

Scenario 1 : If Nelly used 119 cm of her cloth, she would have left thrice the length of cloth Irena had,

Nelly : 119 + (1 unit + 47) + (1 unit + 47) + (1 unit + 47) = 3 units + 260

Irena : (1 unit + 47)

Scenario 2 : If Irena used 47 cm of her cloth, Nelly would have 7 times the length of cloth Irena had left,

7 units = 3 units + 260

1 unit = 260/(7 – 3) = 65

3 units + 260 = 3 x 65 + 260 = 455

(b)

1 unit + 47 = 65 + 47 = 112

Method 2 :

(a)

Scenario 1 : If Nelly used 119 cm of her cloth, she would have left thrice the length of cloth Irena had,

Nelly – 119 ——-> 3 x Irena

7 x Nelly – 833 ——-> 21 x Irena

Scenario 2 : If Irena used 47 cm of her cloth, Nelly would have 7 times the length of cloth Irena had left,

(Irena – 47) x 7 = 7 x Irena – 329 ——-> Nelly

21 x Irena – 987 ——-> 3 x Nelly

21 x Irena ——-> 3 x Nelly + 987

7 x Nelly – 833 ——-> 3 x Nelly + 987

Nelly ——-> (987 + 833)/(7 – 3) = 455

(b)

455 – 119 = 336 ——-> 3 x Irena

Irena ——-> 336/3 = 112

Ans : (a) 455 cm; (b) 112 cm

(3u + 119)/ 7 = (1u – 47) / 1

3u + 119 = 7u – 329

119 + 329 = 7u -3u

b)

1u = 448 ÷ 4 = 112 cm

3u = 112 × 3 = 336

336 + 119 = 455 cm
