Question

Alan was given a total of 208 game cards. He wanted more cards so he bought the same number of cards each day for the next 10 days. At the end of the fifth day, he had bought 5/23 of the total number of cards he was given and had bought in the 10 days. How many game cards did he buy in the 5 days?

Answer

This is a Before After question.

     Before

Transfer

5 days

After

transfer

5 days

After
Quantity  208 + 5u 5u + 208 + 5u 10u + 208
    5     23

5u /5  = (10u + 208)/23

23u = 10u + 208

23u – 10u = 208

13u = 208

1u = 208 ÷ 13 = 16

5u = 5 × 16 = 80 cards

Let the number of cards Alan bought each day be 1 unit.
5 units = (5/23) x (208 + 10u)
115 units = 1040 + 50 units
1 unit = 1040/(115 – 50) = 16
5 units = 5 x 16 = 80

Ans : 80 game cards.
