Scenario 1
Spending ratio
J : M = > 40 : 80

Scenario 2
Spending ratio
J : M => 80 : 40

Janice spends all her money in both scenario, i,e what she had all in the beginning. Make both scenario share a common unit ‘u’ by making janice the same. Times 2 for scenario 1.
Scenario 1
J : M => 80 : 160

From the above scenario, we can express what Marissa had at first with a equation from each scenario.
M = 160u + 500
M = 40u + 1100

160u + 500 = 40u + 1100
120u = 600
u = 5

Marissa = 40u + 1100 = $1300
Janice = 80u = $400

Total they had at first = 1300 + 400 = $1700 ##
