Question

Hi,

seek help on this question please. Thought (a) and (c) are both structural adaptions but there is no answer for (a) and (c).

Thanks.

Answer

The question is poorly designed as it seems to mislead the student into thinking that the structural adaptions were to cope with the scarcity of water.

(4) is correct

a : Long eyelashes keep out the sand from their eyes

b: Camel humps help to store fat to replenish itself when food is scarce

c: Producing concentrated urine makes sense in an arid environment as waster is preserved

d: Camels can actually drink a lot of water in one sitting (up to 20 gallons)

thanks for the reply. (b) is not correct since it mentioned storing water in humps. It is actually fat as you have indicated.

Isn’t (d) – the drinking large amount of water whenever there is a source a behavioral adaptations ?

If the camel chooses to hide under a rock in the day instead of roaming around to find food, that is a behavioral adaptation to the hot weather.

If the camel chooses to drink cold water instead of warm water, it is a behavioral adaption to the hot weather.

But for the camel to drink high volumes of water in one sitting, its body must be engineered in a way or be evolved in a manner such that it is able to withstand the volume hence it is classified as a structural adaption.
