Question

Please help with this P6 Speed Qn. Thanks very much.

The distance between Town P and Town Q is 216 km. At 0710, Timothy left Town P for Town Q. At 0830, Steven left Town Q for Town P. Both did not change their speed throughout. The ratio of Timonthy’s speed to Steven’s speed was 4:3. When they meet each other, their distance from Town P was twice their distance from Town Q. Find Timothy’s speed in km/h.

Answer

This is a Distance Speed Time question.

1. Timothy start 1 hr 20 minutes earlier.  = 1 1/3 h

2. Speed ratio, Timonthy 4u, Steven 3u.

3. Distance ratio PQ 2, QP 1. 216 ×1/3 = 72

   Time   Speed   Distance
Timothy1  1 1/3 4u
Timothy2    4u 144
Steven   3u 72
Total      216

144/4u   = 72/3u + 4/3

432/12u – 288/12u = 4/3

144/12u  = 4/3

432 = 48u

1u = 432 / 48 = 9

4u = 9 × 4 = 36 km/h
