Question

Answer

The MRT station is halfway between both schools.

Let the distance from the MRT to each school be 1 unit.

Alan cycled 1 unit + 90 m.

Brian cycle 1 unit – 90 m.

(1 unit + 90) – (1 unit – 90) = 180

(a) Alan cycled 180 m more than Brian.

Alan’s speed is 12 m/min more than Brian’s.

180 ÷ 12 = 15 minutes

Alan took 15 minutes to cycle to the food court.

72 m/min × 15 min = 1 080 m

(b) The distance of the food court from Alan’s school is 1 080 m.

(1 unit + 90) – (1 unit – 90) = 180 why we need to minus?

Since you are comparing the distance Alan has cycled compared to Brian, you need to subtract to find out how much more Alan has cycled.
