Question

The chairman of the story telling competition advised the teams to speak ______ in the finals as the audience had given feedback that the participants did not speak loud enough in the semi finals.

  1. loud
  2. louder
  3. loudly
  4. more loudly

The answer is 4 : more loudly. Why can’t it be 2 : louder?

Answer

“More loudly” is an adverb modifying the verb speak while the adjective “louder” modifies nouns and noun phrases.

My guess is that “louder” and “more loudly” are grammatically correct in this case as “loud” can be an adverb too when it follows the verb that it describes.

However, the later part of the question has already stated “…that the participants did not speak load enough…” it should use “more loudly” to avoid repetition.

Please correct me if I am wrong. 😀
