2018 SA1 Mathematics Paper 2 Question 15 Nanyang Primary School.

Rachel and Elijah received a fixed amount of money every month. In the first month, Rachel spent $5.60 and Elijah spent $2.80 per day. Rachel had $39.20 left when Elijah had spent all his money. In the second month, Rachel spent $2.80 per day and Elijah spent $5.60 per day. Rachel had $140 left when Elijah has spent all his money. How much money did Rachel receive every month?

Answer

Two clues are given and in both the clues, the amount spent by Elijah is same and the amount of money received by Rachel will be the same.

In the first case, Elijah spends less and so the total days will be more, say it is 2D.

In the second case, Elijah spends more and hence the days are less, say it is D.

Rachel’s money in first case, 5.60 x 2D + 39.20

Rachel’s money in the second case, 2.80 x D + 140

5.60 x 2D +39.20 = 2.80D + 140

11.20D + 39.20 = 2.80D + 140

11.20D – 2.80D = 140 – 39.20

8.40D = 100.80

D = 100.80 / 8.40 = 12 days.

Amount received by rachel = 2.80 x 12 + 140 = $173.60

5.60/2.80 = 2 (the number of days in the first scenario is twice that of the second)
5.60 x 2n + 39.20 = 2.80 x n + 140
n = (140 – 39.20)/(5.60 x 2 – 2.80) = 12
12 x 2 x 5.60 + 39.20 = 173.60
or
12 x 2.80 + 140 = 173.60

Ans : $173.60.
