Answer

I used constant difference…

A : B    (At first)   Difference

3 : 5                            2

A : B       (In the end)

3 :4                            1

times 2                 times 2

6 : 8                           2

6 – 3 =3

3u—12

1u — 12  / 3

    — 4

5u — 4 times 5

        = 20

The answer is wrong.

Hi Owlinker,

Thank you. I had gotten 20 too. But the answer showed 140 hence I was wondering what I could have done wrong. Your reply reaffirms my answer is correct. Basically it’s unchanged difference between them. Thank you for your help. 🙏

If the answer is $140,

($140/5) x 3 = $84 (money Aaron had at first)

84 + 12 = 96

140 + 12 = 152

96 : 152

12 : 19 ($140 is thus incorrect as the ratio could not be reduced to 3 : 4.)

Hi altp10, you are most welcome. Yes, your answer is indeed correct. Also, I believe that most if not all would agree that coaching students in checking their answers is essential too.

This is a question, in which all the entities in a ratio change.

Between start and end, there is a change in the amount of money that Bala and Aaron hold.

  Aaron  Bala
Start  3u 5u
  + 12$ +12$
End  3p 4p

Cross-multiply to make the parts same, the modified table will be

  Aaron Bala
Start  12U 15U
  +48$ +36$
End  12p 12p

since the parts are the same,

12U + 48 = 15U + 36

3U = 12

1U = 4$

Money that Bala had at first was 5U = 5 x 4$ = 20$

Verify

Initially, Bala = 20$, Aaron = 12$

Adding 12$, Bala = 32$, Aaron = 24$

24 : 32  = 6:8 = 3:4
