William wanted to buy a shirt and a tie for her father as a birthday gift. 7 ties cost the same as 3 shirts. 7 ties and 3 shirts cost a total of $3570. How much more did a shirt cost than a tie?

7 ties = 3 shirts

7 ties + 3 shirts = $3,570
6 shirts = $3,570
1 shirt = $3,570 ÷ 6
1 shirt = $595

3 shirts = $595 x 3
3 shirts = $1,785
7 ties = $1,785
1 tie = $1,785 ÷ 7
1 tie = $255

1 shirt – 1 tie = $595 – $255
= $340
